In 1968, the resort headquartered the Republican National Convention's Florida delegation for Richard Nixon, himself a frequent visitor to Miami.
In tribute to these legends of the past, the Marriott unveiled the Legends Ballroom in 2007; the $25 million, 60,000-square-foot facility which can accommodate up to 2,000 guests. Consistently raising the bar of excellence to further enhance the guest experience, the resort has invested over $100 million throughout the years.
Doral Golf Resort is home to the famous TPC BLUE MONSTER at Doral Course, the Great White Course designed by Greg Norman, the new Jim Mclean Signature Course and the historic courses - Gold Course and Red Course:
- TPC BLUE MONSTER COURSE YARDAGE: 6701 | SLOPE / RATING: 72.2 / 125
Originally designed by noted architect Dick Wilson, the Blue Monster has been modified and updated over the past 20 years to meet the demands of the PGA TOUR by two-time Doral champion and Hall-of-Famer Raymond Floyd and world-Renowned golf instructor Jim McLean. Most recently the greens and bunkers were modernized under the watchful eye of the PGA Tour for the WGC-CA Championship, whose inaugural event at Doral Golf & Spa was played in 2007.
- THE GREAT WHITE YARDAGE: 6679 | SLOPE / RATING: 71.7 / 130
A Greg Norman Signature Course, the 7,171-yard, par-72 Great White Course is the only golf course of its kind in the Southeastern United States that utilizes coquina "crushed shells" as the primary design element on every hole. Host to the PGA TOUR's Franklin Templeton "Shoot-Out" in 2000, the Great White was rated as the best new golf course of 2000 by the National Golf Foundation.
- THE JIM McLEAN SIGNATURE COURSE: 6602 SLOPE / RATING: 72.7/142
The Jim McLean Signature Course joined the infamous Blue Monster and the Great White as the third of Doral's premier courses. It is unique among courses in the Southeast because it presents a variety of challenges that include three of the toughest starting holes in golf, a series of phenomenal par 3s, and "The Bermuda Triangle" of the 13th through 15th holes. Five sets of tees let golfers from novices to champions decide how difficult they want the course to be, but no matter where they start, they'll have earned a real sense of accomplishment every time they finish
- THE GOLD COURSE YARDAGE: 6209 | SLOPE / RATING: 70.7 / 124
PGA Tour legend Raymond Floyd recently redesigned this course to follow a traditional Florida layout, incorporating gently contoured greens, strategic bunkering and water surrounding 16 holes. The course features narrow, tree-lined fairways and finishes with a dramatic par-4 island green on the 18th hole. This course hosted the 1999 PGA Qualifying School finals.
- THE RED COURSE YARDAGE: 6058 | SLOPE / RATING: 69.9 / 118
The Red Course forces golfers to use strategy and shot placement, rather than driving for show. Featuring 14 water holes with fairways winding around several lakes, the course provides breath-taking beauty and exhilarating challenges, without intimidating length. This course hosted the LPGA in 2001 for the Office Depot Championship.
Laying the groundwork for the property's golden jubilee in 2012, Doral is currently putting the finishing touches on a $16 million top-to-bottom transformation including:
- New golf course, The Jim McLean Signature Course, added to championship fairways roster
- $5 million renovation of The Spa at Doral
- Bossa Nova lobby bar, Latin-inspired steakhouse, featuring a new executive chef
- Partnership with the PGA Tour's TPC to rename the Blue Monster: TPC Blue Monster at Doral
- Enhancement of The Great White and Gold golf courses with TifEagle greens
